Research Interests
I am interested in the patterns of change in nineteenth century economic landscapes, especially the historical geography of the Australian sugar industry between 1788 and 1915. Since 1991, I have undertaken research into nineteenth century consumption and demand patterns for sugar in Australia, the geographic spread of sugar cane cultivation in Australia, the transformation in the production unit of in the Australian sugar industry (ie plantation to small farms) and technological change in the sugar milling sector (see my specific research interests).
