David Gillieson

Professor of Geography (Cairns)  Research Interests

David's research interests focus on applications of remote sensing and geographical information systems to land management issues in protected areas. David is currently working on applications of high resolution satellite imagery to fire mapping, weed invasion and edge effects in tropical rainforest and savanna environments. He is also very interested in limestone landscape (karst) processes, cave management and environmental monitoring. In 2000 he was a member of the team that produced the management plan for the Gunung Mulu World Heritage Area in Sarawak, Borneo. He is also Chair of the International Geographical Union Commission on Karst and a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas, IUCN.
