The Quality of Seagrass As A Dugong Food Resource: The Importance
of the Effects Of Season and Water Depth
Supervisors
I am studying the nutritional value of seagrasses for dugong. The
project is based in Hervey Bay and aims to determine the effects of
season and water depth on the nutritional quality of heavily and low
grazed seagrasses. I will also examine the recovery rates of seagrasses
after grazing. The project encompasses laboratory work, fieldwork
on intertidal mudflats, working from boats and SCUBA diving. The outcome
of the project will involve advising government and non-government
organisations on the management and protection of dugongs and their
habitat.
This project is partnered with a related project examining the small
scale foraging of dugongs with in Hervey Bay using newly developed
telemetry.
