DUGONGS

With the lead of Professor Helene Marsh, researchers at TESAG have made major contributions to our current knowledge of dugongs. Research has included aspects of dugong biology including reproduction and life history (link to Donna), movements (link to Ivan & James), diet (Link to Jess), foraging ecology (link to Ivan, James, Jaunita, Jane), behavioural ecology (link to Amanda) and population genetics (link to Brenda). Other research includes the sustainability of hunting dugongs by Aboriginal (link to Melissa) and Torres Strait Islander people (link to Donna). The dugong research undertaken at TESAG has been used by peak management agencies such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Authority (link to GBRMPA) and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) for development of policy and management strategies.
