Rainforest Science

The interdisciplinary Rainforest Science program at Cairns involves the application of knowledge from the biological and physical and social sciences to the understanding of natural processes and human interactions with in the rainforest environment. The program of study embraces both theoretical and practical aspects of tropical rainforest science and management, and imparts the skills and knowledge needed for employment in rainforest biology and conservation, in interpretation and management, and for specialist higher degree studies.

See 'Environmental Science and Ecology Programs ' for further information on the degree

Bachelor of Science (Rainforest Science)
Strand Code RC

Students in the rainforest science major will gain knowledge and technical skills necessary for responsible management of tropical environments, with an emphasis on the unique features of rainforests. The focus of this major is on developing a multi-disciplinary understanding of the environment within the context of environmental science and applied ecology. The coursework emphasises field studies in rainforests and in the variety of habitats that interface with these ecosystems. By integrating ecological knowledge with a grounding in communication and critical thinking, students learn to creatively and effectively develop approaches for understanding and solving complex ecological issues. Rainforest scientists may find career opportunities in:

· Environmental consulting
· Rainforest ecology
· Resource/park management
· Environmental assessment
· Environmental interpretation

Leading environmental management organisations are involved with the rainforest science course, and students also benefit from having easy access to the outstanding natural environments of the rainforests of the wet tropics.
